Exposing young adults in South Africa to new opportunities for living a life of purpose
Local Motion is a local NGO that aims to create a supportive environment in the marginalized communities in George, in the Western Cape of South Africa. We operate an after school program, for YOUTHS between 13 – 18 years old, from our centre within the Borcherds community. We provide academic support but also focus on fostering creativity, physical activity, spiritual discipleship, and mentorship. Our aim is to create a LOCAL MOTION that revives our communities through releasing successful young adults, as leaders, who are driven to achieve in life, to live beyond the community’s norm, and to pioneer change.
The focus of Local Motion is largely divided into three spheres: The Spiritual Sphere, The Educational Sphere, and The Social Sphere for youth in the local communities of George. When we look at our communities, we have identified these three spheres as being the most in need. Often in reality these spheres are inseparable, especially with regard to our youth and we therefore refer to them as the SES trilemma we encounter locally. The SES trilemma is unique to every community, to every family, and to every individual even unknowingly. We at Local Motion choose to address these issues by implementing a community-centred approach tailored to meet the needs of every individual. For The Spiritual Sphere we INVEST, for the Educational Sphere we FOCUS and for the Social Sphere we IMPACT
For the past 4 years, we have mentored and discipled over 40 children. The heart of Local Motion is to walk a close personal journey with each individual introducing every child to Jesus Christ, whom we hold to be our Lord and Saviour. We believe in SHARING the gospel and Christian ethos with the youth in combination with SHOWING the gospel through the way we conduct ourselves.
The after-school program and activities presented by Local Motion offer each individual the necessary assistance to excel in their education and skill development. We advocate for exposure to various activities or skills development methods and that is why we consider a dualistic approach having an In-The-Classroom and Out-The-Classroom program.
Unemployment, poverty, substance abuse, and involvement in criminal activities all will become the sad reality for our youth in our local communities UNLESS we see progressive and sustainable social change. We acknowledge that changes in social factors are stubborn, but we are working toward this change in partnership with local leaders, and the greater community.
Local Motion is a Christian PBO working to confront the spiritual, educational and social trilemma, the youth is facing today in George, South Africa.
